Biathlon in Australia
Biathlon is the only sport that combines the two very diverse disciplines of cross-country skate skiing and small-bore target shooting. Predominantly a winter sport it is fun, challenging and exciting or "Cool, Fast, Extreme and Accurate", as we like to define it. Competition events are held during the Australian winter snow season and and training camps during the off-season in the summer and autumn months.
All Championships are held exclusively at the Whiskey Flat Range near Mt Hotham and is the only Biathlon range in Australia. Whiskey Flat Range is located 3km East of Mt Hotham village on the road to Dinner Plain. See the Race Calendar page for further details of all published events.
Biathlon has a relatively small but enthusiastic following in Australia and is growing in numbers every year. The Australian Biathlon Association is devoted to fostering participation and good competition in this exciting sport, and enjoyment of our beautiful alpine regions. All competitions are held at Whiskey Flat at Mount Hotham and is the only registered Alpine shooting range in Australia. The Australian Biathlon Association is a not-for-profit organisation, with the objective of fostering the sport of biathlon within the wider community for the enjoyment, challenge and achievement of participants
With its origins in the military training regimes between Sweden and Norway border patrol units, biathlon is a combination of cross-country skiing and small bore rifle target shooting. It is a very popular Winter Olympic sport with competitions in Europe regularly attracting thousands of spectators. Biathlon in Europe is bigger than Australian Rules Football. We hope that you enjoy your visit to our site and look forward to seeing you on the snow.
